The monthly meetings of the Denton Poets' Assembly features a variety of experiences for the poets:
Spotlight Poet
In this segment the featured poet will give a fifteen minute presentation / overview / reading of this work.
Read and Respond
Each month our teacher, Susan Maxwell Campbell, offers us information and examples from the life and work of influential poets. These have ranged from Tony Hoagland to Elizabeth Bishop. It has also included poets in translation from other countries like Constantine Cavafy (Greece) or Wislawa Szymborska (Poland). The supplemental information Susan provides include bios, interviews, critiques by other poets, speeches, etc. We are then invited to engage with the readings by writing a poem in response to them. Our "response" poems are then read at the following month's meeting. The response can be based on form or content or both, but ought in some way refer to the featured poet’s work, i.e. a beautiful line, a sparked memory or mirrored mood.
Free Choice
During this segment of the meeting, poets read submitted poems on the subject of their choice.
Inspiration
Each month one poet will be invited to describe the inspiration or process for a poem they have submitted in the Read and Respond or Free Choice portion of the meeting.
Introduction of Next Month's Read and Respond Poet
Susan will provide a brief introduction to the feature Read and Respond Poet. She then follows up with an email to the group with selected works from that poet for the chapter members to read, study, learn, and be inspired.
Kudos
Poets are invited to provide comment, feedback, responses to poems read at the meeting. Also DPA poets who have received recent awards, released publications, etc. are recognized.
